Green Solution – New Year’s Resolution

January 1, 2019

Happy New Year!

It’s a new year, so it’s time for a new you! As we say goodbye to 2018, most of us review the past, identify some of our less than desired traits or habits, and participate in the tradition of choosing a New Year’s resolution. They are set to help positively guide us throughout the year. Disappointingly, our New Year’s “promise” is usually abandoned within the first few months. Your friends at Loraas are here to support you and make that promise last until 2020 – and beyond! The solution? This year make a commitment to try a green solution for your New Year’s resolution. New Year’s resolutions not only enhance our personal selves, but a way to enhance the world around us too. Here are Loraas’ three simple tips for a green resolution:

Tip 1: “Stay”cation.

You need a vacation! Whether 2018 treated you well or less than satisfactory, it’s nice to take time away from our busy schedules to relax. Flying or driving to your perfect getaway destination releases excess carbon emissions into the atmosphere; not to mention it can be pricey. The solution – a staycation! Staycations allow you to explore your local community in a new light while avoiding packing, traveler’s fatigue, and finding a baby or pet sitter. Looking for ideas around your hometown? Check out sites like Tourism Saskatoon & Saskatchewan to find fun local activities and explore your own backyard.

Tip 2: “Hanging” with the “cool” kids.

We Saskatchewan folks understand winter – dry and cold. These two characteristics are normally a disadvantage, that is unless you want to skip the dryer and hang dry your clothing instead. Hang drying clothing can save you additional electricity bill charges, as we are already heating our homes to keep them warm. In doing so, your clothing dries quicker than average too! Also, the extra moisture enters the air, and acts like a humidifier, giving your sinuses and skin the extra moisture it craves during the winter season. Say goodbye to shrunken wool sweaters and hello to saving a few extra dollars in your pocket.

Tip 3: Don’t be “spool”ish.

Single-use items are so yesterday! Say no to single-use items like paper towels, tissues, or sanitary napkins. It might not seem like a big issue, but using these items on a daily basis and then discarding them adds up at the landfill. Instead, sew your own or invest in alternative textile option like cotton cloths, fabric hankies, and reusable feminine products. Then simply add them in the laundry when you’re running a load. Using fabric alternatives is just as easy as using the paper version and you only need to buy them once.

Taking on environmentally-friendly initiatives can be a challenge. Working together allows us to make our community cleaner and “greener”. Going green has never been so simple!
