Loraas Recycle, in correlation with the City of Saskatoon, is conducting a quality assurance survey of the rates of non-recyclable (contaminant) items being placed in the Loraas recycling carts across several, randomly chosen neighbourhoods in Saskatoon. Over the course of the summer, the Loraas team will conduct a maximum of three inspections prior to recycling collection day in your neighbourhood from 7 am until 12 pm; your cart will be collected after this allotted time. We will be checking your Loraas blue-carts for items that do not belong to help you to better understand what is appropriate to recycle and what is not. For households that have no contaminants, a green tag will be assigned to your bin with helpful reminders of what to recycle on the back of the tag. When our team finds two or more contaminants or a large volume of one type of contaminant material, yellow tags will inform you of unrecyclable and potentially dangerous materials in your bin. For your safety, we will always self-identify as a member of Loraas and wear safety vests and attire with logos.
The main purpose of our project is to educate on problem contaminants in our process and to help Loraas and the City design education programs for the public, as well as ensure the safety of our facility workers and prevent damage to our machines during the recycling process. Some contaminants can be hazardous to our Materials Recovery Facility (MRF), which is run by both people and machines, working with conveyor belts moving at high speeds. We need your help to eliminate these items in the streamlining processes which helps preserve the environment by diverting recycling materials away from our landfills. This requires a team effort from both the citizens of Saskatoon, City of Saskatoon, and Loraas Recycle.
Should you have any questions or concerns about your recycling please contact the City of Saskatoon at (306) 975-2476 or visit www.saskatoon.ca.
